The beautiful drone of the engine caused people to scurry outdoors to see the yellow bird go by, and the pilot would make full use of its slow low flying ability to amaze the onlookers and wave at them. Ah! gone are those days.

Description: Bristol Beaufighter TF. MK X - NE 429, 489th New Zealand Air Force 489 (New Zealand) Squadron was formed from pilots of the Royal New Zealand Air Force on 12 August 1941 under RAF Coastal Command as an anti-submarine and reconnaissance unit.
The Bristol Beaufighter was a Torpedo Bomber with a crew of two.Maximum speed of 330mph, ceiling 29,000 ft. Max normal range 1500 miles but could extend to 1750 miles. Four 20mm cannon in the belly & up to six .303in browning machine guns in the wings. it could also carry eight 3 -inch rockets, 1605 lb torpedo or a bomb load of 1,000 lb. In the winter of 1940 - 1941 the Beaufighter was used as a night fighter. and in March 1941 the aircraft was used at Coastal Command as a long range strike aircraft. (Wikipedia)

The magestic scenery and awesome rocky formations, coupled with a cold Autumn front moving in, inspired me to paint this work. Catastrophic Plate Techtonics movements of bygone eras, pushed the earth upwards to form magnificent peaks and valleys. The towns of Worcester, Ceres, Montagu and Barrydale boast spectacular landscapes surpast by no others.

The Cogmanskloof Pass mountains boast dramatic cliffs, deep gorges and precipiced peaks in a variety of oranges, reds, chres and greys.

North American Mitchell B-25J III Twin engine medium bomber of the RAF during WW2. Homeward bound from a bombing mission over Germany during mid summer1944, the Mitchell B-25J is separated from the squadron and stays ahead of the looming thunder storm as the sun sets.

The Mitchell bomber was named after Billy Mitchell.
The RAF was allocated 316 B-25Js as Mitchell IIIs. Deliveries took place between August 1944 and August of 1945. However, only about 240 of these planes actually reached Britain, with some being diverted to No. 111 OTU in the Bahamas, some crashing during delivery and some being retained in the USA.

P-51D Mustang Bluenoser of USAF 352nd Fighter Group
 The distinctive blue nose that drove the German Luftwaffe into submission in Europe during WW2.

T6 North American Harvard of SAAF Museum PE

Title: Late Arrival #4.
Description: SAAF North American Harvard T-6 banks over Port Elizabeth south of the Airport to announce its late arrival and to request permission to land. The first prototype flew in 1937, the T6G had a top speed of 341 kmh at sea level with an operational ceiling of 6500m.
A batch of 9 Mk I's were delivered between 1940 and 1942, and the SAAF took delivery of their first batch of Harvard Mk II's in 1942, with deliveries continuing until four Harvards were purchased from the Belgian Air Force in 1961.
The SAAF operated a number of variants, including the MkII (Designated in the US as AT-6C), Mk III's (designated in the US as AT-6D or SJN-4) and the T-6G, the rebuilt version of World War II vintage machines. (Extract from SAAF Museum web site)

This superlative transport aircraft, produced in greater numbers than any other in its category, with almost 11,000 manufactured by the time production ended in 1945, was the most dependable aircraft of its time - Today many are still operational worldwide. During WW2 the USA had the DC-3 converted to a military transport plane and named it the C-47.
